Coalition Urges Humane Conditions at BLM Holding Facilities

The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Preservation) and its coalition partners, including the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), have called on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to ensure humane treatment for wild horses and burros in holding facilities during the sweltering summer months. Despite the BLM's requirement for adopters to provide shelter for these animals, the agency fails to meet its own standards in short-term holding corrals. Consequently, thousands of wild horses and burros endure extreme temperatures in BLM holding pens across the West, with no respite from the sun and heat.
