America’s wild horses are woven into the very fabric of our public lands. But in the next few weeks, two decisions in Washington could put their fate, and the rangelands they road, on the line.

In early July, the House of Representatives will begin marking up its annual spending bill. Before that happens, we need a tidal wave of citizen voices on record supporting wild horses. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Tell Congress: Keep the Ban on Wild Horse Slaughter. The federal slaughter ban is at risk, putting tens of thousands of wild horses in danger. Send a letter now urging your lawmakers to uphold this vital protection and keep these iconic animals safe.
  1. Sign the petition urging the White House to keep the slaughter ban intact. A quick signature tells Congress you expect wild horses to be protected, not shipped across our borders for meat. It takes less than a minute, but the impact can last a lifetime.
  1. Call Your Senators: Our Public Lands Aren’t for Sale. The Senate’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” includes a provision to sell off 2–3 million acres of U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management territory within five years—and makes 250 million acres eligible for sale. These open spaces are a living patchwork of American heritage: migration corridors, tribal histories, recreational havens, and above all home to the bands of mustangs that embody the untamed West.Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to each of your Senators. In a few sentences, let them know:
    1. You oppose any public-land sell-off language in the spending bill.
    2. Wild horses and the ecosystems they sustain must remain in public hands.
    3. You expect your Senators to defend both the land and the animals that depend on it
  1. Support Our Work: This is a crisis, but it's not too late. AWHC is fighting back in Congress, in court, and on the range. Your donation powers this fight to stop slaughter and protect our wild herds through humane, proven solutions. We've done it before. With your help, we will again.

Why Your Advocacy Matters

Wild horses can’t speak for themselves. But you can. Lawmakers are making decisions right now that could determine whether these iconic animals are protected or sent to slaughter, whether our public lands remain free or are sold to the highest bidder. When you raise your voice, Congress listens. Every call, every signature, and every letter helps build the pressure needed to protect what’s wild, free, and irreplaceable.
