Assembly Bill 264: Protecting Nevada's Wild Horses

Assembly Bill 264 (AB264)marks a significant step forward in the protection of Nevada's wild horses. Signed by Governor Brian Sandoval in June 2013, this bill empowers theNevada Department of Agriculture(NDA) to form cooperative agreements with non-profit organizations. These agreements aim to humanely manage the wild horses in the Virginia Range, located outside Reno.

In March, Return to Freedom, the founding organization for the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign), initiated Phase 1 of a plan to safeguard the Virginia Range mustangs. This was achieved byentering into a cooperative agreementwith the NDA, ensuring that no horses captured by the state are sent to slaughter auctions.
