The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently investigating the deaths of 18 wild burros in southeastern Utah. Most of these burros died shortly after being corralled during a spring roundup. This incident has raised concerns about the welfare of wild burros and the conditions they face during such operations.
Details of the Incident
The deaths occurred between April 22 and June 10, according to aBLMnews release. During this period, more than 225 burros were captured from the Sinbad herd near the San Rafael Swell. Of the 18 deaths, 15 occurred at a 32-acre private ranch in Axtell, while the remaining three happened on the range.
Investigation and Findings
Veterinarians have completed initial necropsies on seven of the burros, but a cause of death has not yet been released. Officials noted that there were no obvious signs of trauma or illness in the animals. TheBLMplans to monitor the Sinbad Herd Management Area with an aerial survey to gather more information.
Current Status
The Axtell corral is temporarily closed, and no burros will be moved from the area until the investigation is complete.
