Challis HMA Wild Horse Roundup Reports

Welcome to our roundup reporting page for the Challis Herd Management Area in central Idaho, where you will find eyewitness reports, photographs, videos, and daily totals as the Bureau of Land Management carries out a planned helicopter roundup.

Beginning September 9, the BLM plans to gather approximately 281 of the estimated 331 wild horses in the HMA and permanently remove about 146. The operation is intended to reduce the population to the agency's low Appropriate Management Level of 185 horses; the full AML range is 185 to 253.

The roundup will separate established family bands and send more than 100 wild horses from their public-land home into the federal holding system. Horses not selected for removal are expected to be returned to the range after processing.

Our field observers will attend whenever access is provided to witness helicopter drives, monitor horse welfare, document roundup conditions, and provide the public with transparent, independent reporting.

This page will serve as a living record of the Challis roundup. Throughout the operation, we will publish daily capture, removal, and release totals, photographs, videos, and firsthand observations so the public can follow events as they unfold.
