Community Meeting on Wild Horses
On June 26, 2013, theBLMCarson City District held a meeting to address the presence of wild horses in the Fish Springs area of the Pine Nut Mountains Herd Management Area (HMA). The meeting was a remarkable display of community support for these wild horses. Approximately 50-60 residents from Gardnerville and Nevada attended the meeting in Carson City to discuss the 30-40 wild horses living in the Fish Springs area, just outside Gardnerville, NV.
The room was filled with wild horse advocates. Two local residents expressed concerns about the wild horses near their homes. Together, the group devisedsolutionsto address these concerns while keeping the horses on the range. There was unanimous agreement on wanting the horses to remain in the area, extending the HMA boundary to include this region, and implementing a humane fertility-control program. Additionally, they proposed using water troughs to encourage the horses to move away from homes and closer to a natural creek in the nearby hills.
TheBLMCarson City meeting exemplified community collaboration, working together to find a humane solution to keep wild horses in the wild.
