CANON CITY, Colo. (CBS4)– A noxious weed is being blamed for killing 19 horses at the Wild Horse Inmate Program facility. Inmates train selectmustangsat the facility.
The Bureau of Land Management says lab results show the horses ingested whorled milkweed, which is a highly toxic plant. The weed was in the hay fed to the horses.
The animals died last week. Several other horses are still recovering.
