The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has halted its controversial plan to sterilize wild mares in Oregon. This decision follows a preliminary injunction granted by the court on November 2, 2018, which was a result of legal challenges from plaintiffs concerned about the project's impact on wild horse populations.
TheBLMfiled a motion on November 7, stating that it lacks the authority to unilaterally reverse an official record of the plans. However, it intends to file a motion to redact the language with the Interior Board of Land Appeals soon.
The motion indicates that theBLMwill rescind its portion of the Decision Record related to the spay feasibility and on-range behavioral outcomes assessment study. Nevertheless, theBLMwill maintain the part of the Decision Record that allows for the return of horses to the Warm Springs Herd Management Area and the permanent removal of excess horses from the range.
