Welcome to our roundup reporting page for the Sulphur Herd Management Area in western Utah, where you will find daily capture totals, mortality reports, photographs, videos, and updates as the Bureau of Land Management carries out a helicopter roundup.

The operation began on October 2. The BLM plans to capture and permanently remove approximately 300 wild horses from the Sulphur HMA. The agency manages the herd at an Appropriate Management Level of just 165 to 250 horses across approximately 265,711 acres.

The Sulphur herd is known for its long-established roots in the region. Some horses retain traits associated with Colonial Spanish horses, including dun and grulla coloring, dorsal stripes, striped legs, bi-colored manes and tails, and other distinctive characteristics found in only a limited number of wild horse herds in the United States.

The roundup will separate established family bands and send hundreds of wild horses into the federal holding system. Horses removed from the range will be transported to the Sutherland Off-Range Contract Wild Horse Facility near Delta, Utah.

AWHC does not have an observer onsite for this operation. Our reporting will be based on daily figures and information published by the BLM, along with other verified reports and available documentation about the roundup’s activities and impacts.

This page will serve as a living record of the Sulphur roundup. Throughout the operation, we will report capture, shipping, release, and mortality totals and share new information as it becomes available so the public can follow what is happening to this historic herd.

We hope these reports bring greater transparency to the removal and strengthen the call for humane, science-based management that protects viable wild horse populations and prioritizes keeping America’s wild horses free on the range.
