The Virginia Range Program Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination of the volunteers implementing American Wild Horse Conservation’s program to protect the Virginia Range free-roaming horse population in Nevada. This position is based in the Northern Nevada (greater Reno/Carson) area with a minimum of 25% of time spent in the field. This non-exempt position reports to the Nevada State Director.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsibilities include

  • Recruit and manage volunteers who implement the Fertility Control and Diversionary Feeding Programs
  • Foster relationships with businesses and local landowners
  • Complete an AWHC-sponsored training to become certified in the application of the PZP immunocontraceptive vaccine to wild horses via remote darting

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Coordination of the Virginia Range Fertility Control Program

  • Lead the implementation of the Fertility Control Program and ensure that treatment targets are met
  • Oversee adherence to Program protocols and recommend/research changes to protocols with the NV team as necessary
  • Manage inventory tracking and order and deliver darting and other supplies to volunteers as needed
  • Coordinate training of new volunteers with the Science and Conservation Center (SCC), the entity that oversees vaccine implementation pursuant to its EPA registration
  • Coordinate field training of new volunteers with veteran darters
  • Compile and submit required reports to property owners such as Blockchains, Tract, and any other required parties.

Volunteer Management

  • Coordinate, manage, and train a team of volunteers who serve in the following roles:Darters trained and certified by the Science and Conservation Center to administer the PZP vaccineSpotters, who assist darters in identifying horses and dart recoveryDocumenters, who identify and catalog horses in a comprehensive database of individuals within the Virginia Range horse population
  • Field questions and concerns from volunteers and maintain communications to ensure smooth operations, offer encouragement and support
  • Recruit volunteers and coordinate new volunteer training
  • Conduct yearly training meetings on protocol updates, adjustments, and program development
  • Compile and file monthly volunteer mileage reports
  • Oversee scheduling of company vehicle (Jeep)
  • Manage equipment repair as needed
  • Maintain volunteer records in Google Drive
  • Conduct field visits and support field darting activities
  • Plan annual holiday appreciation party

Private Property Access Management

  • Maintain relationships with participating private property owners and promptly address any issues that arise
  • Deliver access notifications and requested reports to property owners or their representatives

Coordinate TRI Diversionary Feed Program

  • Assist NV Operations Coordinator with verifying locations, assembling request packets, and working with Wild Horse Connection to secure NDA approval
  • Secure certified weed-free hay
  • Coordinate volunteer feeding schedule
  • Serve as AWHC’s field representative to assist with the above activities

Community Relations

  • Educate the local public and business owners about the Fertility Control Program and promote cooperative relationships
  • Collect and post content for AWHC’s Stay Wild Nevada Facebook page

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong organizational and people skills
  • Volunteer coordination experience
  • An interest in wildlife and environmental protection
  • The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including hiking on uneven terrain in open range environments
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Knowledge of horses desirable

Reports to: Nevada State Director

Status: Full-Time Non-Exempt

Location: Reno–Carson City–Gardnerville Ranchos, NV

Salary

$24.5 - $27.15 per hour
