The Warm Springs Canyon Herd Management Area (HMA)

The Warm Springs Canyon Herd Management Area (HMA) offers a unique opportunity to observewild burrosand horses in their natural habitat. Spanning approximately 83,136 acres of public and private lands, the area features a plateau dissected by steep north-south trending canyons composed of volcanic materials. Elevations range from 4,550 feet at Fly Canyon to 7,084 feet at Trough Mountain. The climate is characterized by warm, dry days, cool nights, and low yearly precipitation, ranging from 6 to 8 inches at lower elevations to about 14 inches at higher elevations.

How to Get There

The Warm Springs Canyon HMA is located in western Humboldt County, approximately 140 miles north of Reno, Nevada.

About the Burros

It is estimated that approximately 25 burros reside in this HMA. The majority of the burros exhibit a gray color pattern; however, pinto burros are also found in the area. This HMA is also home to wild horses.
